September 2024 — The Strategy Edit

Welcome to the first of many monthly newsletters from your pal Pam of The Strategy Edit.

If you've been in my world for a while, you might know that my email list style has changed drastically over the years. From pretty colour coded emails to unhinged plain text emails with more gifs than necessary and back again — it feels like I've seen and done it all.

The Editor's List is my latest iteration of a newsletter and it's definitely going to be a departure from what I've done in the past. I'll probably send out plain text emails every now and again, but you can expect a long-form monthly digest from me with what's happening in my world, the shifts I'm seeing in the world of creative entrepreneurship, and what resources and articles I'm liking.

So let's get started on what's happening in September.

🚀 The Strategy Edit has launched!

I finally launched The Strategy Edit at the end of August after 2 years of learning and experimenting, and while it feels so good for TSE to finally be out in the open, I'm just getting started.

The current main offerings of TSE are strategy intensives and as of today I've launched the most massive giveaway in my 10 years of business. I'm giving away a strategy intensive with me plus some extra goodies that's worth $2,300!

P.S. If this isn't for you but know someone else who could benefit from it, just forward this email to them.

✍🏽 5 launch lessons I've learned over the last 2 weeks

  1. It doesn't matter how long you've been in business or how many times you've launched, starting a new business is not for the faint of the heart. So if you've ever launched a business or are in the process of doing so, congrats! This is truly the hardest part!
  2. Planning an activity to celebrate the launch was vital to keeping my spirits high as I felt super vulnerable showing up in a new way for a new audience. (I celebrated with a sushi dinner! 🍣)
  3. Launching is the equivalent of opening the hangar doors for an airplane to start rolling out. You, the business owner build a metaphorical plane when you create something new. And when you share it with the world, you're opening the doors so people can experience it. Opening the doors doesn't mean you've even began your trek down the runway or lift off. That in itself is a huge mindset shift to make when it comes to bringing something new to market.
  4. Your squad is everything — every text, call, email, share, and pat on the back filled me with gratitude and that in itself felt like a win
  5. No roll out is perfect. I had so many plans for how I was going to have all these things in play when I launched, but life happens. Yes, I wanted to send you this email like 2 weeks ago, but I couldn't get around it till now. And that's alright.

🍼 Being an absolute noob at social media again

So it turns out that when you don't show up on social media for like a year, the landscape changes and in my case, it feels like I'm having to learn everything all over again.

Metricool just released their 2024 Instagram Study where they analyzed data from 390,000+ IG business and creator accounts.

Here's what they found is working now

  • Stories are the most utilized format (70% of analyzed data)
  • Reels had the highest reach at 37.87% (compared to other formats)
  • Carousels had the highest engagement ratio at 10.15%

What you need to know

  • Stories have the lowest reach (3.13%) — they have good potential for connecting with your existing audience but has low reach for non-followers
  • Publishing more ≠ higher reach. Your hook on reels and copy for carousel covers are more important than ever
  • Reels are necessary for reach and "small" accounts (500-2K followers) are being rewarded the most with the latest algorithm updates
  • The best time to post on Instagram on average is 7-9 PM globally regardless of time zone, with Wednesday and Friday being the best days
  • The second image on a carousel is displayed a few hours after you post, be strategic of what you share on this slide!

🤖 An actually helpful chatGPT prompt to try out

Spoiler alert, I use chatGPT like EVERY DAY. No, I didn't use it to write this email, but I use it a lot to find the potential gaps in my writing and sales pages.

When I began to sketch out who my target audience was back in March, this is the prompt that helped me get started:

You are now the world’s best marketing consultant. I need help getting clearer on identifying my ideal clients so I can create content for them. What input do you need from me to help me clarify their goals, problems, and how I can best help them?

🆘 A resource for the overwhelmed and friends with ADHD

September is a season of many things: pumpkin spice lattes, chunky sweaters, resigning myself to 7 months of winter, and back to school.

If you're finding yourself overwhelmed AF right now, try out this website called Goblin Tools. It's truly the best for helping you break down tasks into a to-do list that you can make it as simple or as detailed as you want.

Some of the folks in my circle who have ADHD have had success using this in their day-to-day lives and it gets their seal of approval.

🔜 What's coming soon

The launch of digital products and mini courses is what you're going to see from me in the coming months — from resources for service and product based business owners to some super niche content specifically for creatives...get ready for some new fun stuff!

So how do we feel — do we love this new format? Do we hate it? Regardless, I had fun writing this which I haven't felt in a long while — so that should count for something. Hit reply anyways and tell me what you think!

I'll be sending you a (plain text) email next Tuesday just to remind you of the deadline for the giveaway. But until next month...

Have a great week!
